Smoke from the tree

I got lost. Again.

Somehow, I ended up hugging myself by a tree in 5°C, hoping my body would magically generate heat. My friend couldn't find me in his own neighborhood. I was completely lost.

I couldn't even hold my phone to text anybody. It was too cold. So I just stuck to talking to the Holy Ghost in me, my best friend in any weather, hoping my friend would find me before I gave in to freezing up. I rubbed my hands together and sighed heavily for the 100th time that day.

And then… I saw smoke.

Ah ah! Smoke… right in my face? Who is this?!

I whipped my head around, ready to fight. Because why would somebody complicate this cold for me? I looked around… nobody. Nobody?

For a full minute, I stood there like a malfunctioning GPS, waving my hands in the air, trying to chase the "mystery smoke" away. I moved to another spot. It followed me.

At that point, I was convinced someone was playing games. I squinted into the trees suspiciously, angry at whoever was tricking me in the freezing cold. But if it was someone, they were doing a brilliant job of staying hidden. I was out here arguing with air. Still, the "smoke" puffed right back in my face.

By the time I finally found my friend, I narrated my near-paranormal experience with full drama. I expected shock, sympathy, something.

He blinked, stifled a laugh, and said,

"Oh… that's just the air from your mouth."

Yes. My own breath. The thing in movies where it looks like they're breathing out smoke? That was me. Panicking over the special effects of real life.
